Tell us about yourself (where are you from, age, whatever you want to add)

My name is Emma K. and I am 20 years old from Detroit, Michigan. I spend my days working towards graduating with my bachelors from Michigan State University, modeling, and dancing. Though my education is very important to me, I’ve always loved modeling and I believe my work ethic and positive attitude will help me to achieve my goals in the modeling industry.

Tell us about your modeling experience.

I’ve been modeling for almost 4 years now, doing a variety of different things including dance-related shoots, book cover shoots, and brand promotions.

What is your biggest dream?

My biggest dream is to build my platform as a successful model as well as an accomplished academic so that I can help demonstrate to young girls that they are so much more than their outer appearance, bringing them confidence and strength. I want to empower women to break stereotypes that define them by their looks, and encourage education for young girls across the globe. It is my dream to someday open a non profit that focuses on these goals of empowerment and fights against sexual assault and domestic abuse towards girls/women.

What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?

In my opinion being your own kind of beautiful is simply being yourself, which is unique to each individual. I believe that every person is different and every person’s beauty shines through most when they are just being themselves.

How would you describe your fashion style?

My fashion style is inspired by different models and designers, but there’s definitely a lot of ‘me’ in everything I wear. I like to incorporate some pink in almost every outfit I wear, and I dress in ways that make me feel confident and comfortable.

Who or what inspires you?

I am inspired most by my mom. My mom is my best friend and my greatest supporter, and I am inspired by everything she has accomplished and everything she has done for the people she loves. I want to follow in her footsteps in many ways.

What have been your greatest accomplishments?

Getting accepted into my university was one of my greatest accomplishments and I am so proud of how far I’ve come—only a few more months until graduation! I have done so much of what I wanted to do in the past couple of years, including becoming part of a dance team at my college, being an honors student here, and being part of the executive board for a club whose mission is to end domestic violence.

Do you have any special talents?

I am a dancer, and I’ve been dancing for around 17 years. In general I am a creative person in many aspects of the word, and I enjoy showing this creatively through dance, writing, and drawing.

Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.

I have struggled a lot with my mental health throughout my life. I’ve always felt like I was in a battle against my own brain and my own emotions, and this has been a very difficult struggle for me. Though I would not say my mental health is perfect, I’ve definitely come such a long way, just in the past few years. Since moving away from my family to attend college, I’ve had to learn a lot about myself and about how to deal with my emotions on my own. I’ve come so far and every day I work hard to get better. This has made me an independent person with a lot of motivation and strength.

What makes you beautiful/handsome?

In my opinion the thing that makes me beautiful is my compassion towards others. I’ve always had a big heart and I want to help others at any change I can get. I think compassion and empathy are beautiful.

What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?

Confidence comes and goes, and it can be hard to become or maintain confidence; we’ve all struggled with this and you are not alone if you are dealing with this right now. Don’t be mad at yourself for not being confident right now. It’s okay that today’s not your day. But always remember that you are very special and unique in this world. You have every reason to be confident, even if you don’t feel it just yet.
