Tell us about yourself:
I am Sulma C. I was born in Amarillo, Texas. I have lived in many states throughout the US and even got the chance to be in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico for a few months. I enjoy spreading positivity and I do whatever I can to help others around me. I spend my free time in a dance studio or going out on long walks.
Tell us about your modeling experience.
I started off modeling by joining an academy in Mexico which led me to competing in events and pageants. I held the title Miss Universal Petite Frontera and moved on to compete at state. I moved on to Nationals and now get to represent as Miss Universal Petite USA, meaning I am representing all the Latinos. It is an honor to be chosen as this representative for I am also Latina. I began working with photographers and brands which helped me learn more and more each time. I modeled for many brands and makeup stylists. I also had the opportunity to join in in a music video and came out on the morning news on TV.
What is your biggest dream?
My biggest dream is to take modeling as far as I can as a career and hope that someday I can work with bigger brands, including traveling outside of the US, and finding a way to become an inspiration for other women. I want to become someone people can look up to and take advice from. I want to show others that they are beautiful no matter what and prove you don't need to change.
What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?
To me, being your own kind of beautiful means living life to the fullest while you remain positive about your own self. Having that self confidence while also helping others remain positive gives you a good reputation. If you feel good about yourself, you feel good about life. Helping others with self confidence shows everyone you don't think just about yourself and that you do care about others.
Describe your fashion style.
Describing my own style is a bit hard... I am not too picky and I will do my best to pull anything off. I am very open to different fashion trends and I'm willing to try anything new. Life wise I also just go with whatever is going on. I listen to every type of music, I try new foods, and each day I have a different mood. So I would describe it as "random" because you never know what's coming.
Who or what inspires you?
The person that inspires me the most is Megan Leavey. Megan Leavey is a former US Marine who worked as a k9 handler. We both have a few things in common and I look up to her and advice she gives out. I see her as a strong independent woman who struggled with her personal life yet found something she enjoys and fought for which helped her become a better person and helped her feel good.
What advice would you give someone who is just getting started in modeling?
My advice to someone getting started in the modeling industry is to just keep fighting. Always do your best even when no one is around. Practice as much as you can and do not stop until you get to where you wanna be. There will always be tough moments but you have to imagine yourself in the future doing what you love and being successful. The longer you fight the further you get.
Describe some obstacles that you have overcome.
I passed through many tough obstacles to get to where I am at. I was at a very young age experiencing traumatic moments. I fought my way through my mental health illness and I am currently still fighting that battle. These tough moments have made me realize that maybe it was a good thing, I am very mature and have great responsibility. I learned how to take care of myself and how to make smart choices. I have experienced many good and bad moments and I still have so much to see for I am only 18 years old.
What makes you beautiful?
What makes me beautiful is my ability to see the best in other people. It's easy to criticize and judge but it is hard to love and accept people. I personally love giving out compliments and I try to in every opportunity that I get. It makes people feel good about themselves while it also makes me feel good and happy. I see no reason to be negative towards someone when we could be working and helping each other out. So in my opinion I think that is what makes me stand out the most.
What would you say to another girl your age who is struggling with their confidence?
If someone is struggling with confidence I would first reassure them and help them understand that they are not alone. I struggled a lot and it is something that will always be part of a person, but if you hide your confidence and keep telling yourself you don't look good then you won't look good. In my opinion you could look like any person in the world but with some confidence, you will have positive feedback. confidence is what attracts attention, not what you wear or what you say. It's okay to struggle a bit, just take one step at a time and always try to remain positive. With positivity and practice, you will eventually get there. Don't give up!
