Tell us about yourself

Hi! My name is Maggie, I’m a model from Virginia Beach, VA.

Tell us about your modeling experience.

I got my first real start modeling during college while working at a local bridal shop. The owner quickly recruited me from working as a bridal consultant to modeling her dresses instead. After getting my foot in the door of bridal fashion and formalwear, I knew I wanted to do more. I moved to Washington, D.C. after graduating, and was able to expand my modeling portfolio from there. My modeling resume is very spontaneous and varied- I love the ability to switch things up! My portfolio includes everything from swimwear to high fashion/editorial. I most recently walked in Miami Swim Week this past July, and plan on walking in NYFW this upcoming February. I’ve previously walked with DC Swim Week, DC Fashion Week, and other runways located throughout Virginia. I’ve had the opportunity to be published in several international magazines, and featured on various covers as well.

What is your biggest dream?

I have quite a few. Walking in NYFW has been my most recent – which looks like will be coming true this February!

What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?

Being your own kind of beautiful means not being afraid to be different from everyone else. It’s so important to be your own person, and not necessarily conform to what people want you to be. Having confidence to stand out from others is beautiful. At the end of the day, as long as you’re a good person who’s making others’ lives better, I don’t think anyone has a right to judge you. Figure out who you want to be, and be that person unapologetically. It’s cliché but true; beauty starts on the inside.

How would you describe your fashion style?

It changes constantly! I love being able to wear different looks- it’s fun to wear something feminine and elegant one day, and pull off something completely opposite the next.

Who or what inspires you?

I’m always inspired by a challenge. If someone tells me I can’t do something – I’ll try even harder to make sure I accomplish that one thing. I’m inspired by people who work hard and aren’t afraid to be themselves.

My family and friends inspire me everyday, and will always be my priority in my life.

What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?

Don’t give up! Be prepared to face a lot of opposition. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told “no” compared to the times I’m told “yes”. Keep yourself focused on the big picture, and keep your head high while you’re getting there.

I think it’s really important also to not lose yourself in the process. Keep your boundaries firm, and remember what you stand for.

Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.

Getting started with modeling was difficult for me on a personal level. I have a career in healthcare, and was afraid of being stigmatized for being involved in the fashion industry. I was also afraid of sharing a different side of myself publicly and being judged by those who know me. It’s amazing to see how much happier I am now that I’ve let that fear go.

Being a petite model has also been tough in the fashion industry. A lot of designers refuse to ever look at me because I don’t stand at traditional runway height. I keep showing up and keep putting myself out there; I learned how to still stand out in a room even if I’m not the tallest model.

What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?

Fake it till you make it! Show up as the best version of yourself; be that person that everyone always wants to be around. Know that even the most confident people are sometimes struggling too.
