Tell us about yourself:

My name is Josephine B., I am a 22 year old beginner model and designer from Maryland. Ever since I was 11 years old, I’ve wanted to grow up and be a professional model.  I would take my laptop outside and have “photoshoots” by myself. Once I got a nice camera, that hobby grew even more. As I got older, that dream didn’t seem as attainable as I wanted it to be. Then earlier this year I began sewing my own clothes and working with my friend’s clothing brand. When I found out our designs would be in DC Fashion Week, I immediately applied to be a model. I made the call and even modeled my own creation at the fashion show! This is something I was terrified to do and even almost talked myself out of, but I knew in order to grow, I had to face my fears. It’s something that I am so thankful for and proud of myself for doing because look at where I am now!

What is your biggest dream?

I have many, many different dreams. Being signed to a modeling agency is one of them! I aspire to be a powerful, successful woman with a career doing something I love along with inspiring other people to get out of their comfort zone. Just like I did.

What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?

To be yourself, to be comfortable in your own skin. To own your flaws while also knowing that you are still a beautiful human. To be loving, accepting, and supportive of others. That is true beauty to me.

How would you describe your fashion style?

I love almost anything with floral, lace, embroidery, pastel, and vintage clothing. May I mention that For Love and Lemons and Gunne Sax are my favorites? I also love an edgy outfit once in a while.

Who or what inspires you?

Many people and things inspire me. One being my younger self, feeling so insecure and powerless due to other’s remarks about me. She would be so proud to know that I now have the confidence to walk down a runway.

Another person being my friend, Dida, who is the one I design with. He has accomplished so much for only being 21 years old. He is the hardest working person I know and has a life-changing mindset. He has helped me a lot with my confidence issues.

What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?

Well, I’m just now getting started with professional modeling, but what I kept telling myself is that I need to do this in order to grow and get to where I want to be in life. No matter how intimidating it may seem, it is possible. Even if you don’t do it well, all that matters is you tried and will grow from this. Eventually something good will stem from it.

Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.
The biggest obstacle I’ve ever faced is having OCD. I have struggled with it on and off my entire life, but at the end of 2018 it became severe. My mind was always racing, my hands always sweating, endless compulsions. It began to take a serious toll on my body physically. It wasn’t until early 2022 that my mind started to calm. Once I could gather myself from that torment, I was able to take control of my life again. OCD will always be there, but I’ve learned to co-exist with it. It has made me a much stronger person, knowing I was able to survive something I never thought I’d get out of. It made me realize even more that my 20s are something that cannot be wasted. I felt like I was doing that with how bad my mental health was. Now that I’m better, I know that I need to seize every day and opportunity that comes my way, so I can live the way I want to. With the way my life is now, it’s the biggest breath of fresh air I could ever take.

What makes you beautiful?

I don’t mean this in an arrogant way, but I know I am an understanding, non-judgemental, loving person. I will always be there for a friend whether they need advice or just someone to listen. I’ve grown a lot spiritually the past few years, which has helped turn me into the person I am today. Of course no one is perfect, but I try to be my best self.

What would you say to someone your age who is struggling with confidence?

Don’t compare yourself to others. Seriously, I used to feel like I was the most beautiful woman, but when I’d see others, my confidence would immediately drop. I grew to realize that I can find other women beautiful, while also still seeing my beauty because there are so many different types! I can also say, find something to stand for. If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. Don’t let other people’s opinions and views influence you.. Stand true in your authentic self.
