Hi! My name is Maya DeWakar I am originally from the Washington D.C. area, but I have been living in San Diego for the past 4 years! I am mixed raced Indian, Italian, Irish and English! I am passionate about many things including sustainability, travel, fashion, art, music, sports, and cooking!
Tell us about your modeling experience.
This is my first time working with an agency, which I am so grateful for! Previously, I have done social media collabs with brands who have sent me free products to promote their brand! I have also modeled for small businesses of friends!
What is your biggest dream?
My biggest dream in life is to create a secure, happy and healthy life for myself and my family. I want to be an inspiration for young children struggling with cancer, mental health or any other issues. Professionally my dream is to work with my favorite brands including Reformation, Prada and Chanel! I’ve always dreamed of being an actress and model for runway, print and commercial! I’m so excited to continue towards these dreams with you all!
What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?
To me, being your own kind of beautiful is owning every part of you in full. Being proud of who you are, where you come from and all that you’ve been through. Being beautiful is not just about what you look like, it is what is in your heart and how you treat the people in your life!
How would you describe your fashion style?
I would describe my fashion style as edgy and eclectic. I love to take risks and wear things that make me feel confident. I would say I’m a mix of European style, street wear and bohemian beachy. I don’t like to limit myself to one thing. I’ve always been super culturally diverse, and I like to represent that in my fashion choices!
Who or what inspires you?
The women in my life inspire me the most. From my amazing mother, beautiful sister and great friends, nurses and doctors I’ve had the pleasure to know. Empowering one another is huge and all the crazy things we have to deal with as women and always seem to overcome is the biggest inspiration of all.
What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?
My advice to someone who is just starting with modeling is to keep trying no matter how many times you feel you’ve failed! Take a bunch of pictures, play with different styles and looks and most importantly shoot when you feel beautiful!
Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.
The biggest obstacle I have overcome is beating my battle with leukemia when I was 17 years old. I lost my opportunity to play lacrosse in college and 3 vital years of my life. Although it sounds strange, I am grateful for the experience because it brought me where I am today and has shaped my values for the better. I never again will take the little things for granted and I have another chance at life to make it the best I can for myself, others and the world.
What makes you beautiful/handsome?
What makes me beautiful is the love I have for the world, and everyone in it. I have always loved to travel because it has encouraged me to keep an open mind and appreciate all the beautiful things, cultures and people. To me, being positive and kind to myself, others and the planet is what truly makes me beautiful.
What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?
I would tell them to take a second to look around to think about what in their life they are grateful for. Then use that love from all the beautiful things in their lives and embody that! When I struggle with my confidence, I put on a song that will make me smile, write down what I’m thankful for and take some time for meditation and self-love. My overall message would be to love every part of yourself, your scars and what makes you unique. There is only one you in this world and that is beautiful in itself! What you put out into the universe, will come back to you. Even though it can be hard at times, it is so important to keep a positive mindset and lead your life with love!
