Tell us about yourself (where are you from, age, whatever you want to add)

Hi, I am Joannah and I'm 23 years old. I reside in Austin, Texas however I am originally from "The Pearl of Africa," Uganda. I grew up in several countries in East Africa and the states. I'm a Graphic Design major, a bit of an adrenaline junkie, and all about adventure. When I'm not creating digital designs or being photogenic I try to encourage and educate myself and others about epilepsy awareness. I have gone through 6 brain surgeries and modeling helped me find my confidence.

Tell us about your modeling experience.

At the mall with my family at the age of 8, a talent agent asked me to strut my stuff and that's when I knew I had to get involved in modeling but I had to wait until high school. 2016 and 2017 I had a few experiences in Kenya. Last year I was back home in Uganda modeling for Crystal Modeling Africa.

What is your biggest dream?

I aspire to graduate and prosper in the field of Graphic design, and hopefully inspire and build awareness of neurological conditions through my art and motivational talks.

What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?

Everyone is unique. My description of my own kind of beautiful would be knowing how divine you are, respecting and loving, as well as being at peace with yourself and embracing it!

How would you describe your fashion style?

My style changes quite a bit depending on the event or my mood. I would say I am into simplistic, elegant, and classy looks. Then again I also like to rock the tomboy look when it comes to certain trends and seasons.

Who or what inspires you?

My mother is my motivation and inspiration. Despite her raising an epileptic child she never gave up on my health, my education, or modeling. She's my reminder to be the best person I can possibly be.

What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?

Reach for the stars and make those dreams come true. You never know unless you try.

Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.

I was diagnosed with epilepsy 15 years ago and had several brain surgeries. During the time of surgery I lost a bit of memory, spent nearly 8 months recovering, and I had to repeat a grade. I can proudly say I am an epilepsy warrior and I'm determined to get my degree soon. It was a hard and lonely time but it exposed me to the love I have for fashion and art. Most of all I found myself within the journey.

What makes you beautiful/ handsome?

I believe my perspective on life makes me beautiful. To me life is a blessing and that gives me such serenity, my strength, confidence, and wisdom that all make me beautiful.

What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?

We make mistakes, are different, and have our insecurities because we are human. Recognize and embrace the things that make you the unique jewel that you are.
