Tell us about yourself (where are you from, age, whatever you want to add)
Hello! My name is Sophia Hardcastle and I am a Minneapolis based Thai mixed model. I am currently a junior at the University of Concordia in St.paul, and I am studying digital marketing, and I also work for a marketing agency as a freelance social media manager. Both my job and my school are online, so I can study and work from anywhere in the world. Going into things, I always knew that I wanted to give myself the freedom to follow my dreams of modeling internationally. I am also very passionate about health and wellness, and am a certified health and wellness coach.
Tell us about your modeling experience.
I’ve been modeling for about 5 months now. My first ever modeling job was a bridal runway show, and since then I’ve gotten to model commercially as well.
What is your biggest dream?
My biggest modeling dream is to model for Sports Illustrated swimsuit.
What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?
Being your own kind of beautiful means feeling confident and healthy.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I would describe my fashion style as a blend between girly, badass, and functional. I think of myself as having a personality with many contrasts within it, and I like to express that through my style. For example, I like to do boxing and spend time on my grandpa's farm, but I also like to model and attend fashion shows. It's a blend of ‘girly’ and also ‘badass’ so I like to wear a lot of corsets from Victoria's secret, but I’ll throw a leather jacket over it, stuff like that. But as far as many of my other outfits go, I'm in the gym a lot so I do wear athletic wear or sweatpants quite often as well.
Who or what inspires you?
One person that inspires me is a model named Lorena Duran. She modeled for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, and the reason I find her so inspiring is because she's got so many features that look like my own. When I came across her instagram, I felt so baffled and excited to see certain physical features of myself being represented through her. This is why I want to model. I want other women to be able to see things in me that they identify with, and feel empowered by that representation.
And lastly, if you can dream it, you can do it. The power of the mind is truly incredible, and to think that we all have the power to become some greater version of ourselves each and every day is something I find really inspiring.
What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?
My advice to anyone who is just getting started in modeling would be to always treat everyone with kindness. You never really know what connections can come from knowing certain people, and it's important to always spread that positivity in the industry regardless.
Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.
When I was a young teenager, I engaged in a lot of unhealthy eating patterns because I wanted to make myself as small and skinny as possible. While disordered eating was one of the hardest mental battles I’ve ever had to overcome, I wouldn't change it for anything. I feel like it enables me to be an even better role model to young girls, as well as allows me to connect to other women in general. Everyone has bad body image days sometimes, and it is important for us as women to be able to talk about it openly and also bring each other up and support each other in our own self love journeys.
What makes you beautiful/handsome?
Something that makes me beautiful is what a visionary I am. I know that whatever I can dream, I can do.
What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?
Something I would say to another person struggling with their confidence is that this life is long, and it's your job to always be on your own side. We do this by loving ourselves to the best of our abilities every day. Some days that will look different than others, but everything is a journey. I think you're beautiful.
