Tell us about yourself
My name is Kaylee D and I am currently 22 years old. I was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and also have lived in Colorado and North Carolina. I am currently a senior in college, I will be graduating at the end of this year. I am majoring in fashion merchandising with a minor in art, but modeling is my true passion.
Tell us about your modeling experience.
For as long as I can remember, I knew I wanted to be a model. I knew this would be something I have to work for, and my first step was to build a portfolio. I had walked in a few smaller fashion shows before this, put on by Kendall College of Art and Design and Central Michigan University. I used those images, and began scheduling photoshoots with photographers in my area. Once I had complied enough professional images, I began my search for an agency. I signed with Beauty In Me Modeling Company in September of 2021. From there, I made connections with more photographers, and had the opportunity to walk in more shows. I walked in the “Blackout” Fashion Show put on by Jer DeCor, Beauty In Me’s “Into the Future” Show, and most recently, “Beyond The Horizon” Fashion Show in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I love all aspects of modeling, and I hope to grow further connections within the industry.
What is your biggest dream?
My biggest dream would be to stay successful within the modeling industry. I hope to continue to model for years to come, and inspire others to do the same. Although I always knew I wanted to model, breaking into the industry can be intimidating. I hope to inspire others through my own journey, as I turn my biggest dream into a reality.
What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?
To me, beauty comes from the inside and out. To be my own kind of beautiful means to treat everyone with kindness and respect. As well as this, to spread positivity to others and myself. I want to radiate confidence to others, because to me, that is beautiful.
How would you describe your fashion style?
My fashion style is unique, I tend to stay away from current trends. I want to express who I am through my clothing, and use it to stand out in a crowd. I love to shop second hand stores, I always leave with a garment that makes me proud to own.
Who or what inspires you?
As cliche as it may sound, my friends inspire me. I have been so thankful to find such supportive friends within the modeling industry. We constantly build each other up, and congratulate one another after big wins. I love having a friend group who I can relate to, I’ve met some of the most inspiring people. My friends keep me motivated and push me to try new things.
What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?
To anyone who is beginning their modeling careers, I would advise them to stay positive. The modeling industry is challenging, but if you believe in yourself, you truly CAN do it. I was rejected many times before I got to where I am today. As a model, we always have room to grow and improve ourselves. Be open to learning and trying new poses which will get you out of your comfort zone. Often times, the crazier the better! Be open to all opportunities that will come your way. Love yourself and remain confident in who you are.
Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.
I have faced many obstacles in my life, the most challenging would be moving. I have lived in 3 different states, and change never came easy to me. When I graduated from middle school, my family moved to North Carolina. At first, I was super sad. I was scared to start high school in an unknown area, and knew I would miss my friends. The first two years of high school were tough, I struggled to meet people and felt out of place. As time went on, I began to open up and talk to more people in my classes. I was able to adapt to my surroundings and I am overall thankful for that move. This experience shaped me in many ways, I learned the importance of being myself. Once I opened up to others and showed my true personality, I fit right in! Moving was a scary experience, but I learned a lot about myself. Now, leaving my hometown is much easier and I enjoy visiting new places.
What makes you beautiful/handsome?
What makes me beautiful is my personality. I can be a shy person, but once I get to know you, I’ll do almost anything for that person. I try to be positive and uplift others by giving them compliments. Empowering others is a beautiful thing, and I work hard to treat everyone with the upmost respect. Kindness goes a long way, and I believe what is on the inside makes us most beautiful.
What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?
Over the recent years, I have taught myself to be confident. Each morning, I look at myself in the mirror and say a few positive affirmations. Gaining confidence takes time, and we all have our good and bad days. It is important to know your worth, tell yourself you are incredible. I also like to keep a journal, where I write down positives each day. The more you practice confidence, the more it will radiate. I have said positive affirmations to myself for a year now, and I have noticed myself becoming more confident in who I am. Do small things each day which will boost your self esteem, self care is important too!
