Tell us about yourself (where are you from, age, whatever you want to add)
Hi, my name is Akili! I’m 20 years old and I’m from Milwaukee Wisconsin. I am currently a junior in college in North Carolina and I am studying voice performance. I am a very chill and fun-loving person who tries their best to be the positive interaction that someone experiences in a day.
Tell us about your modeling experience.
I started modeling when I was 17, I had been told multiple times to give it a try and my goal in life has always been to go into entertainment. I haven’t done too much because I’ve been focused on school but I am very excited to start this new chapter of my career.
What is your biggest dream?
My biggest dream is to be a role model for little girls everywhere who wanted to be something bigger than what they thought was possible.
What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?
I think being your own kind of beautiful is accepting everything that you have felt insecure about. Knowing that you are beautiful even if you are not what you consider the ideal body or face, you are still someone special.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I’ve been told that I dressed like a hippie, a grandma, basic, and even a little eccentric but I believe that I dress like me. I wear whatever makes me feel comfortable in my own body, I really like to mix different styles, like flowy and then tight or boho-chic.
Who or what inspires you?
I am definitely inspired by people that are willing to test the barriers, Zendaya actually would probably be one of the bigger influences for me. I would really want to be her friend, I just think that she has opened so many doors for tall, black, skinny girls like me. She can sing, she can model, she can dance, she can act. I mean what can’t she do and I want to be just like that I want people to ask what can’t I do.
What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?
I think something that everyone should know when they are trying to get into modeling is not to give up and to give yourself time to succeed. We all mature and overcome new challenges at our own rate. But if you love it never give up!
Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.
I have always been a huge perfectionist, I feel that if something isn’t the exact way it should be that it’s wrong. But I’ve learned to be more forgiving with myself, I think it’s important to let things go.
What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?
I would say that you are a beautiful person, you don’t have to look a certain way to be beautiful you were born to be a star.
