Tell us about yourself (where are you from, age, whatever you want to add)
Hi my name is Diana, I’m 25 years old. I was born in Cali, Colombia. My family and I moved to Florida in the early 2000s. One day I decided to move to New York to follow my dreams. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to be a model, my aunt and my grandmother would dressed me up and play modeling, since my aunt was an actual model in her teens and 20s. When I was 8 years old I used to draw/designed clothes. I’ve always had a love for art and anything to do with creating. My mom would try to get me to signed up for modeling as a kid but I was too nervous, she didn’t forced me. As I grew older I suffered from mental health, it’s been over 10 years, it’s been a difficult journey, but really spiritual. I hope to be an inspiration for people who are struggling with mental health. I’m in the healthcare career, I work in an urgent care that has a motto of “kindness”. I love it, I love helping people.
Tell us about your modeling experience.
I’ve always wanted to be a model but felt so silly to act on it specially because I’m not “tall enough” but everyone would always tell me “you should be a model” I don’t know if they were just being nice but that inspired me and I replied “one day”. I finally decided to follow my dream, I met people with the same ambition and I got inspiration, I went on model workshops, I met real life models talking about their experience, this one particular petite model from the same country I’m from made it! And I felt so determined. I went on photo shots, I bought my own camera, sent out applications to agencies and so on. I love it all.
What is your biggest dream?
My biggest dream is giving my family everything. Make enough money to build schools in my hometown. Give back my community. Be the change I want to see. I want to be a super model and be I at fashion week in nyc one day. Be a great fashion designer and donate clothes to the less fortunate, a best selling author, I also love to write, the next Picasso of the century, I love painting. I love photography and capturing life. I also want to be an actress and a comedian. I want to inspire people and create beautiful things and give back.
What does it mean to be your own kind of beautiful?
It means be yourself, love yourself in every way possible, you’re one of a kind.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I love to try out everything especially when I see a trendy new style I have to try it out right away, I love the 90s look too, that comfy look. My style is mostly by the occasion or where I’m going or the season. In the winter I’m more edgy. In the summer more sexy, in the fall more street comfy, in the spring more preppy and so on. But my favorite has to be that edgy look, with short hair and dr marten boots with semi baggy jeans and a crop puffy jacket.
Who or what inspires you?
There’s so many inspirations. My mom she inspires me to be stronger and never to give up. Celebrities such as Selena Gomez and Diane Guerrero inspires me to follow my dreams and love myself, that’s it’s okay to make mental health your first priority and to talk about it. The city of New York inspires me everyday that anything is possible. Nature inspires me to draw and dance and feel everything that life has to offer. Sunrises and sunsets inspires me that new beginnings and endings are beautiful.
What is your advice to someone who is just getting started with modeling?
Break the stereotypes!! Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do it! Never give up. Life is full of surprises. Follow your dreams.
Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.
My mental health has been the hardest obstacle in my life for over 10 years, it has made me turn down so many opportunities throughout my life not because the lack of confidence but the high amount of anxiety I get, I can’t control it but I learned to live with it. I can finally say that I won that battle. My depression and anxiety made me who I am today I don’t regret anything I’ve been through I wouldn’t change anything, it humbled me and reminds me to be kind to everyone I meet. It made me a stronger person.
What makes you beautiful/handsome?
My soul and my mind makes me beautiful. How I treat others with kindness and respect. My inner beauty matches with my outer beauty and that’s what makes me beautiful.
What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with their confidence?
I would tell them to believe in themselves, that we are all beautiful in our own ways. There’s no one else like you in the world.
