Tell us about yourself.
My name is Jemekia, I am 27 years old and my home resides in SC. South Carolina has been my home for 26 years. I was raised with my sister and by my amazing single mother. Living in South Carolina I quickly took to the outdoors. Never a single thing I didn’t want to get into. Mom helped to turn that energy into something constructive. At the age of 5 I was put on to a Rec League basketball team. From there I kicked off a love of athletic chain of events that would last another 15+ years. That love led me to compete in volleyball, basketball, & Track-Field in high School. Then on to college, as a Division 1 Track & Field Student-Athlete. Since then, I have been furthering my education. I am currently enrolled back in school, with goals of being a licensed counselor some day. I also plan to pursue my dream of modeling on a major scale. As well as my goals to establish my own business & non- profit.
Tell us about your modeling experience.
Originally, I begin my career at the age of 14 with a local modeling school. At that time I was barely 143 pounds. I was told to lose 10 additional pounds and to come back then. Unfortunately, the incident left me terribly discouraged. Following the incident I pursued my career on and off, but not seriously the following years. That is until my amazing support system, to include my boyfriend literally pushed me back out onto the runway two years ago. From there I have been pushing my modeling career full force. I won’t stop until I’ve achieved my dreams.
What does it mean to be your own type of beautiful?
To me..to be your own type of beautiful is not only composed of physical beauty, but what that beauty is composed of. To be your own type of beautiful you have to be confident in what you see everyday and love it! I feel you should be: strong, resilient, confident, compassionate, unique, and diverse!
How do you describe your fashion style?
Trying to describe my fashion style made me laugh, because I wasn’t quite sure how to word my eccentric mashup style so directly. What I came up with, was a mashup of very late 80s - early to mid 90s style (with my own added flairs of course). Sometimes I get lost in the nostalgia of it all. When I’m not reminiscing I do love highly eccentric, unique, and different looks.
Who or what inspires you?
The who is composed of the best support system I could ever hope for. I could not even get into each “who” I might have you guys here all day lol.
I will say each one of them adds to the WHAT that inspires me. They push for ME to be the “what” that inspires me. To wake up every day and move with a purpose and to always trust the process.
Would have been your greatest accomplishments?
My biggest and brightest accomplishment, outside of my school and athletics. For me it has been gaining a new understanding of myself. Learning to overcome my mental health battles as well as life’s adversities, with resilience and confidence. Overall... just learning to love me, and everything that entails.
Do you have any special talents?
For a long time I wasn’t sure what that special talent was. I ended up being talented in more than one arena in life. I believe now that is my special talent... my ability to adapt, apply, and excel with timed efficiency. my special talent is to be multifaceted, because one box can’t truly hold me.
Describe some obstacles you have overcome in your life and how that has changed or shaped you.
A few obstacles that I have overcome....well I’m not quite ready to share openly. Those few incidences affected me directly mind, body, and soul. It caused me severe panic attacks, paired with anxiety and other mental health issues. One part of my support system was a brilliant woman and psychologist the late Dr. Kendra O Cusaac. She, in addition to the rest of my support, aided me in overcoming my adversities. To truly recognize my gift to do the same for others, and I am grateful for them all.
What makes you beautiful?
This question proved a bit more difficult to answer than I previously assumed. The reason for that being because, it made me really sit down to address what I find beautiful in myself. Here’s what I learned...The features that I find beautiful on my physical body (being incredibly tall, long legs, slender frame, strong jawline), were features that I hated before. To add insult to injury, I had no confidence. Absolutely none... to love the person I am. What makes me beautiful today is that I love EVERYTHING I see, and I have the the confidence to match this beautiful soul. :)
What would you say to another girl/guy your age who is struggling with confidence?
I would tell them to love who you are inside and out! Don’t be afraid to outgrow certain situations or people not promoting your growth and/or confidence. Acknowledge the things that you find imperfect, and learn to find the beauty in them. Make sure you are beautiful inside and out.
